Variations Page
The Variations page is where you create alternative versions of each trait and extract them as transparent layers. This page has two tabs:
- Variations Tab - Generate modified versions of your base image
- Extract Tab - Extract transparent layers from variations using masks
Variations Tab
Page Layout
- Canvas (center) - Shows the current variation or base image
- Right panel - Trait list and variation prompts
- Thumbnail stack (bottom-right) - Switch between variation variants
Selecting a Trait
Click a trait name in the right panel to select it. The canvas shows that trait's mask overlay.
Creating Variations
Writing Variation Prompts
- Select a trait
- Find the Variation Prompts section
- Enter a prompt describing the modification:
glowing red LED eyes with internal light
Good prompts:
- Describe only the trait change
- Match the original art style
- Be specific about colors, materials, effects
Avoid:
- Describing other parts of the image
- Switching art styles
- Vague descriptions like "different eyes"
Generating
- Click the generate button next to a prompt
- The AI creates a modified version of the full image
- The layer is automatically extracted using the trait's mask
- The result appears in the layer strip
Variation Variants
Like masks, each variation prompt can have up to 5 variants:
- Multiple generation attempts
- Different results from the same prompt
- Backups of good results
Favoriting: Star the variants you want included in combinations.
Layer Strip
The layer strip at the bottom shows all layers for the selected trait:
| Layer | Label | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Original | orig | Base image layer (auto-generated from mask) |
| Variation 1 | p0 | First variation prompt |
| Variation 2 | p1 | Second variation prompt |
| ... | pN | Nth variation prompt |
Each prompt (p0, p1, etc.) can have multiple variants (v1-v5).

- Revise — Edit the variation with custom instructions using an AI edit model
- Delete — Remove the specific variant
Favoriting Variations
Click the star on any variation to mark it as a favorite. Favorited variations will be shown first in the Extract tab.
Viewing Variations
- Canvas - Shows the full variation image
- Thumbnail stack - Switch between variants (v1-v5) of the same prompt
Extract Tab
The Extract tab is where you turn variation images into transparent layers by applying masks.
Page Layout
- Canvas (center) - Shows the extracted layer or variation image
- Right panel - Trait list and extraction controls
- Layer strip (bottom) - All extracted layers for the selected trait
How Extraction Works
- Select a trait to see its variations
- Click Extract on a variation (or Extract All)
- The trait's favorite mask is applied to the variation image
- Only the masked pixels are kept, creating a transparent PNG layer
- The layer appears in the layer strip
Original Layer
The "original" layer (orig) is automatically extracted from your base image using the trait's mask. This gives you the unmodified version of each trait as a layer.
Layer Strip
The layer strip shows all extracted layers for the selected trait:
| Layer | Label | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Original | orig | Base image layer (extracted from mask) |
| Variation 1 | p0 | First variation prompt |
| Variation 2 | p1 | Second variation prompt |
| ... | pN | Nth variation prompt |
Each prompt (p0, p1, etc.) can have multiple variants (v1-v5).
Favoriting Layers
Click the star on any layer to mark it as a favorite. During combination:
- Favorite-only mode (default): Only starred layers are used
- All layers mode: Every layer is included
This lets you extract many layers but only use your best work in combinations.
Viewing Layers
In Canvas:
- Select a layer from the strip to view it
- Shows the transparent layer over the base image
- Helps you see how it will composite
In Thumbnail Stack:
- Switch between variants of the same layer
- v1, v2, v3... for each prompt
- Quickly compare different extractions
Tips
- Generate multiple variants - AI results vary, pick the best
- Match the style - Variations should look like they belong
- Check extracted layers - Zoom in on edges for quality
- Use specific prompts - "glowing red LED" beats "red"
- Favorite selectively - Only include your best work
- Test the mask first - If layers look wrong, check the mask
Common Issues
Layer has artifacts
The mask may include unwanted areas. Go back to Detection and refine the mask.
Variation doesn't match style
Rewrite the prompt to include style information:
glowing red LED eyes, same flat digital art style
Wrong area was modified
The AI may have modified more than intended. Check that your mask accurately covers only the trait.
